CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Lukas was thankful for the weekend. He grabbed his sandwich and headed for his sofa to kick his feet up on the coffee table and watch TV. Just as he took a bite, he heard a motorcycle pull into his driveway followed by a knock on his front door. Dropping his sandwich onto the plate, he brushed his hands together and went to the door, Sauerkraut nipping at his heels and barking wildly.

“Mr. Hilton. Come on in.” Lukas was surprised to see Julia’s dad in his doorway.

“Sorry to bother you, Lukas. I went over to George’s house, but he wasn’t there, so I thought I’d try you.”

“Is there a problem?”

“No, no problem. It’s just that I didn’t get a chance to talk with you two the other day when I was at the house, and I really didn’t want to go back to the house right now.” Mr. Hilton looked a bit embarrassed. “I wanted to let you fellas know what a great job you’re doing, and I wanted to tell you not to worry about what my wife says. She’s just not herself these days.”

Unfortunately, Lukas remembered all too well his encounters with Mrs. Hilton, and she seemed exactly herself.

“Well, that was very kind of you to come all the way over here to tell me that.”

“I saw the door open to your barn, so I checked for you there first and spotted a fishing boat in the making. Are you building it?”

“Yes sir.” Lukas couldn’t help feeling a smidgen of pride.

“It’s a fine boat. A very fine boat, indeed. Is this a side business for you?”

“Not yet. Maybe one day.”

“Well, you certainly should consider the idea.”

“Thank you, Mr. Hilton.”

“Say, I don’t suppose you’d consider designing a boat for me? A fishing boat? I love to fish and haven’t had near the time to do so…until recently. It’s time I had a little fun.”

“Sure, I’d be happy to build you a fishing boat. I can’t promise how soon I’d be finished with it, since I’m working on your house and plan to start some renovations on my own house, but I can build it.”

“That’s good enough for me. I won’t expect it for this summer, but I can enjoy it next year. Maybe by then I can talk the missus into enjoying it with me.”

That comment relieved Lukas.

They walked into the barn and talked about the details for Mr. Hilton’s boat. They settled upon a price and Mr. Hilton moved toward the door to leave.

“Hey, I have a good friend who has a boat like the one I’d like you to make. Maybe I could contact him and take you out on it. Would you be willing?”

“That would be swell,” Lukas said.

“Okay, I’ll be in touch.” Mr. Hilton gave a salute, climbed onto his Harley, and drove away.

Life could be strange sometimes. The last thing Lukas considered when he moved here was that he would one day make a boat or work on a room addition for the parents of the woman he had loved—especially knowing how much Julia’s mother had hated him.
